Woven bowl hand-crafted from flax (Harakeke / Phorimium Tenax) using traditional Maori weaving techniques. The paua (abalone) shell inset comes from a native New Zealand shellfish that is treasured for its exquisite colouring. The flax and shell has been heat treated to aid export.
Flax is indigenous to New Zealand and belongs to the Lily family. It has strong fibrous qualities and hence was widely used by Maori for clothing, mats, baskets and fishing. In the 1800's a small rope making industry was established creating flax fibre rope.
