Handmade flax (Harakeke / Phorimium Tenax) kete / basket woven using traditional Maori weaving techniques and perfect for taking to the beach, carrying shopping or just as an every day handbag or "man bag." The flax which is a hardy natural fibre of New Zealand can be been heat treated to aid export for international customers.
Flax is indigenous to New Zealand and belongs to the Lily family. It has strong fibrous qualities and hence was widely used by Maori for clothing, mats, baskets and fishing. In the 1800's a small rope making industry was established creating flax fibre rope.
