Woven bowl hand-crafted from flax (Harakeke / Phorimium Tenax) using traditional Maori weaving techniques. The paua (abalone) shell inset comes from a native New Zealand shellfish that is treasured for its exquisite colouring. The flax and shell has been heat treated to aid export.
Flax is indigenous to New Zealand and belongs to the Lily family. It has strong fibrous qualities and hence was widely used by Maori for clothing, mats, baskets and fishing. In the 1800's a small rope making industry was established creating flax fibre rope.

Favourite New Zealand destination? The wild west coast beaches where I can beachcomb for shells, driftwood and sea life, a good holiday is when the car heads home jam packed willbuckets of rocks, sacks of shells and driftwood tied on the roof!Favourite childhood memory?Travelling around the South Island with my family when I was 13 in a house bus The most environmentally friendly thing you do?The choice of materials I use in my work. The work I create is all made from natural found materials which I collect and utilize, from flax, rocks, willow, shells and wood, collecting the material is all part of the journey.
